Thousands of vehicle owners in Maharashtra – who had been waiting for months to get their new RC (vehicle registration certificate) books and permanent licenses due to the shortage of smart cards – will not have to wait much longer. The state transport department decided to use modern machinery to speed up the printing of smart cards. The department claims that at least 45,000 cards will be produced every day in order to speed up the production of permanent licenses and RC books. The new smart cards are also more cost-effective, have a better quality, and a different layout than the old ones. Owners of vehicles will be able to purchase the new smart card starting July 1.

According to the state transport department’s information, regional transport offices (RTOs), for the first, will not be allowed to print on the smart card the name and the address of the vehicle owner. This privilege will be available to only three RTOs in the state, namely Pune, Mumbai and Nagpur.

“Vehicle owners will now get a smart card in a new form. This has been changed to reflect the necessary changes. The cards will be in large quantities and of high quality. So, vehicle owners will not have to wait for the card,” said Vivek Bhimanwar, state transport commissioner.

The contract between the State Transport Department and Rosemarta of Hyderabad for the supply smart cards was terminated. Manipal Technology Company in Karnataka has won the contract for smart card supply.
