SCELC Partners with Auto-Graphics to Offer One-Year Pilot Shared Print Discovery Catalog

admin

FONTANA, CA/ACCESSWIRE/December 12, 2022 Auto-Graphics, Inc. and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium have partnered on a pilot program for one year to provide a novel approach to shared print in academic libraries.

After approval by the SCELC Board of Directors the SCELC Shared Print and Resource Sharing Committees began to design, create and implement a pilot shared printer discovery catalog built on Auto-Graphics SHAREit platform.

The project, called SHARP, will contain a database of over 40 institutions’ circulating print monograph retention obligations. Participating libraries can access the catalog as a discovery tool. Records can be exported to other discovery layers with links back to SHARP.

“SCELC is thrilled about the partnership with Auto-Graphics in creating a discovery and access solution for monographic shared printer retention commitments. This fills an important gap that Shared Print programs have in their infrastructure needs,” Linda Wobbe, eJournal Relation Manager and Liaison to Resources Sharing and Shared Print committees at SCELC. “The shared printing community includes over 50 programs to retain print resources. It has registered more than 25 million retention obligations in WorldCat with SCELC, making it the third-largest registered retention program.”

Although academic libraries all over the country have developed many shared printing solutions, there isn’t one. The key to this innovative effort is to adapt a resource-sharing platform with a mechanism that houses metadata that refers to the academic library’s shared printing collection and its retention policy. Library staff can also collect key metrics to help publishers determine what to digitize.

“Auto-Graphics is excited about the opportunity to continue to work with SCELC, a national consortium,” said Albert Flores, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Auto-Graphics, Inc. “When SCELC presented the concept of a shared-print system, we felt strongly that SHAREit would be an ideal platform to solve the need for a regional or national shared-print solution for the academic community.”

Initial implementation will include live status checks and resource sharing functionality. Full functionality is expected to be available by 2023.

In 1986, the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium was created to facilitate resource sharing among libraries at private academic institutions in Southern California. SCELC is exempt from tax and has expanded to include libraries in California and 38 other states. SCELC is one of the five largest North American consortia by licensing volume. It represents over 200 member institutions and a student population of around 500,000. The library budgets for SCELC exceed $200 million. Nearly 2,500 electronic resources can be licensed by SCELC libraries from over 100 vendors.
