KUALA LUMPUR – Graft busters in Malaysia have arrested a former secretary of a minister, as well as another person. They were investigating alleged kickbacks allegedly paid for a project worth millions.
Sources from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the two were arrested on Saturday night (Sept 23) after their statements had been taken at the Commission headquarters in Putrajaya.
Both suspects were remanded in custody until September 26.
Sources said the first suspect, a politician in his 20s who was the political secretary of a former minister senior, was a young man.
The second is an owner in his fifties of a small company who was believed to have worked with the Minister in bribing him and his company via his own company, in order to get a book-printing project approved through direct negotiations.
Sources add that the estimated cost of the book printing project is around RM80mil.
Datuk Seri Ahmed Khusairi, MACC deputy chief Commissioner (Operations), confirmed that the arrest had been made when contacted. “The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009,” he said.
